Working dogs have always fascinated me because they show us what dogs are capable of when we stop thinking only about “obedience” and start thinking about purpose.

Over nearly 30 years of dog training, our work at All Creatures Country Club has included much more than basic manners.

We have worked with service dogs, scent work, advanced obedience, public-access training, and working Malinois trained for specialized protocols.

And working dogs teach us one lesson over and over:

Advanced training isn’t simply more commands. It is more reliable.

Can the dog perform when the location changes?

When another dog walks past?

When people are moving around?

When excitement goes up?

When the dog has to think independently and still remain connected to the handler?

That takes more than drilling Sit and Down.

It takes clear communication, reinforcement, repetition, generalization, problem-solving and trust.

Your own dog doesn’t have to be a fire dog, service dog or working K9 to benefit from the same principles.

Give them things to learn.

Let them use their nose.

Teach them how to solve problems.

Practice skills in the real world.

And build a relationship in which listening to you actually means something.

Good training gives dogs skills.
Advanced training makes those skills dependable.
Relationships turn training into partnership.
